According to the April Agricultural Production System Survey released by the Brazilian Institute of Geographical Statistics (IBGE) on the 14th, Brazil's total major crop production in 2026 is expected to set a new record, driven by another record soybean production.

Brazil's total crop production is expected to reach a record 348.7 million tons this year, up 0.7% from the peak reached in 2025, according to a report in the State of São Paulo newspaper. This represents an increase of 2.6 million tons. Compared with the March survey results, 2026 total production will increase by 0.1%, than the previous estimate of 334.277 thousand tons.

Soybean production is expected to grow 4.8 percent this year to reach an all-time peak of 174.1 million tons. Coffee production is expected to increase by 14.9 per cent compared to 2025, while sorghum production is forecast to increase 1.0 per cent.

Carlos Alfredo Guedes, Agricultural Manager at IBGE, explained: "Coffee production is expected to be 4 million tonnes, thanks to a two-year" one abundance "cycle, favourable weather conditions and more favourable prices, which have combined to drive the increase in acreage and yield."

On the other hand, production of cotton (-8.9 per cent), rice (-10.6 per cent), maize (-2.5 per cent), wheat (-6.8 per cent) and pulses (-4.6 per cent) is expected to decline.

For maize, production will increase by 15.2% in the first quarter, but will decrease by 6.4% in the second quarter. "Maize production is expected to be 138.2 million tonnes, 2.5 per cent below last year's record level. Despite good growing conditions in the second season, the final outcome depends on the harvest and could be a surprise." Guedes said in a statement from IBGE.

The 2026 harvest season is projected to reach 83.3 million hectares, an increase of 1.7 million hectares, or 2.1 percent, over 2025. Compared to the March survey, the estimated area harvested increased by 128.572 thousand hectares.

In terms of area under cultivation of major agricultural products, soybeans are expected to grow by 1.2 per cent, maize by 3.4 per cent (11.9% in the first quarter and 1.3 per cent in the second), and sorghum by 8.5 per cent. In contrast, cotton plantations are expected to decrease by 4.3 per cent, rice plantations by 10.4 per cent and pulses by 3.8 per cent.
