According to SeafoodMedia, Scottish mackerel already accounts for 20% of the market in Japan, and Japanese retail giant Aeon Retail has formed a strategic partnership with the Scottish International Development Agency (SDI) to launch its latest promotion.
In fiscal year 2020, Japan imported about 2,000 tons of mackerel from Scotland, worth about $4.9 million, to fiscal year 2025, imports soared to 17,650 tons, worth $73.8 million.
The Scottish mackerel fishing season runs from September to January, with the main catch areas being the western North Atlantic and the North Sea. Recent changes in sea temperature have caused fish to migrate into British waters earlier than in previous decades.
The change allows fishermen to catch larger, fat-rich mackerel offshore, ensuring that freshness peaks when processed.
Whether caught by trawling or by fenced nets, mackerel quality is consistent.
Mackerel, which migrates to the western North Atlantic during peak season, is highly regarded for its excellent meat and high oil content, perfectly suited to the demanding needs of Japanese consumers.
The promotional activities carried out at Yongwang stores this year have focused not only on the mackerel itself, but also on creating the consumer experience. Experts encourage consumers to enjoy salted mackerel with Scotch whisky.
