According to SeafoodMedia, Brazil’s annual wild-capture fisheries yield approximately 1.78 million tons, while the aquaculture sector produces over 3.1 million tons. The industry employs over 1 million registered professional fishermen, with approximately 507,000 of them being female.
Aquaculture has created 4,126 direct jobs and over 16,000 indirect jobs for the local community.
Brazilians consume an average of 12 kg of fish per year, with per capita consumption soaring to over 40 kg in regions such as Ceará, Pernambuco, and the Amazon.
Shrimp, tilapia, and tambaí fish dominate the domestic sales market. The government plans to establish stringent traceability standards by improving the tracking system from “the water to the table” in the hope of enhancing the value of Brazilian export products and providing greater safety guarantees for the domestic market.
Meanwhile, the government continues to explore incentive measures to reduce production costs, ensuring that fish becomes a staple protein in everyday diets rather than a seasonal luxury item.
