According to the UK Tuna Spenders Report 2026, nearly half (49%) of tuna products in the UK are now MSC certified.

This represents a significant jump from the 18 per cent recorded in 2021. Tuna has also officially surpassed cod for the first time as the UK's best-selling MSC-certified wild-caught fish.

MSC research shows that 83% of consumers under the age of 30 actively choose sustainably harvested fish.

Affordable prices, the popularity of sushi among Gen Z, and increased environmental protection awareness have contributed to the market shift.

Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of tuna sold in UK supermarkets carry an MSC-certified label, up from 25 per cent two years ago.

In 2024 / 25, consumers in the UK and Ireland bought 45,840 tonnes of certified tuna. The region now accounts for 18% of global MSC certified tuna sales, more than double the 8% share in 2023 / 24.

The number of retail outlets selling MSC-certified tuna has jumped from three in 2021 to 10 today. A number of retail industry giants have achieved 100% sustainability targets for their own brand ranges, including Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Iceland supermarkets.

Discount retailers Lidl and Aldi have also significantly expanded their offerings of certified products. In the branding space, Princes announced in February that it had achieved its commitment to 100% MSC certification, while industry giants John West and Rio Mare continue to expand their inventory of eco-label products.
