Chamomile or camomile (/ˈkæmɵmiːl/ kam-ə-meel or /ˈkæmɵmaɪl/kam-ə-myl) is the commonname for several daisy-like plants of the family Asteraceae that are commonlyused to make a herb infusion that can help to induce sleep. Because chamomilecan cause uterine contractions that can cause miscarriage, the U.S. NationalInstitutes of Health recommends that pregnant and nursing mothers not consumechamomile. Persons who are allergic to ragweed (also in the daisy family) mayalso be allergic to chamomile, due to cross-reactivity. However, there is stillsome debate as to whether people with reported allergies to chamomile weretruly exposed to chamomile, or to a plant of similar appearance.
