A groundbreaking study on herring roe omega-3

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and Norwegian biotech company Arctic Bioscience are leading a major research project to investigate the health benefits of herring roe omega-3. Named Active Romega, this three-year study is the largest of its kind, exploring how this unique form of omega-3 supports metabolism, muscle function, and cognitive health.

Why herring roe omega-3?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain function, heart health, and reducing inflammation. However, many people do not consume enough omega-3-rich foods, such as oily fish. The Active Romega project focuses on herring roe omega-3, which is richer in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and specialised pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) than traditional fish oils.

Unlike standard fish oils, herring roe omega-3 is in phospholipid form, which may lead to better absorption and enhanced health benefits compared to triglyceride-based omega-3 supplements.

What this study will investigate

The research includes two key strands, each led by ARU PhD students:

  • Exercise recovery and metabolism: Examining how herring roe omega-3 helps with muscle recovery in active females.
  • Healthy ageing: Investigating its role in supporting muscle and cognitive function in older adults.

Dr. Sanjoy Deb, associate professor in exercise and nutritional science at ARU, explains:

“Some studies suggest marine-based phospholipids are better absorbed, leading to greater health benefits. Our Active Romega project will provide crucial insights into these advantages.”

Potential impact on the food & beverage industry

If the research confirms its benefits, herring roe omega-3 could drive innovation in sports nutrition and functional foods, leading to:

  • Sports drinks and supplements that enhance muscle recovery.
  • Omega-3 enriched functional foods for active lifestyles.
  • Medical nutrition products to support cognitive function and mobility.
  • More effective omega-3 supplements with superior absorption compared to traditional fish oils.

Hogne Hallaråker, founder and chief science officer of Arctic Bioscience, highlights the study’s significance:

“We have worked with herring roe phospholipids and proteins for years, and we see great potential in sports nutrition and beyond.”

A new era for omega-3 science

As demand for science-backed functional foods grows, Active Romega could lead the way in next-generation sports nutrition, medical supplements, and omega-3-enriched products. The findings may transform how we approach health, performance, and longevity.

With its unique phospholipid structure and high DHA content, herring roe omega-3 could offer a more effective alternative to conventional fish oils. This research has the potential to expand the omega-3 market, benefiting consumers looking for targeted nutrition to support sports recovery, cognitive health, and overall well-being.
