Epimedium, also known as barrenwort, bishop's hat, fairy wings, horny goatweed, rowdy lamb herb, randy beef grass or yin yang huo (Chinese: 淫羊藿), is a genus of flowering plantsin the family Berberidaceae. There are about 50 species, the majority of whichare endemic to China.
Epimedium species are deciduous orevergreen hardy perennials. The majority have four-parted"spider-like" flowers in spring.
The plant contains icariin, which is a PDE5inhibitor like sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra. It is thereforeused as an aphrodisiac and a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Epimedium has been shown to up-regulate genes associated withnitric oxide production and changes in adenosine/guanine monophosphate balancein ways that other PDE5 inhibitors do not. Epimedium may have potential to helpsexual dysfunction and osteoporosis..
