Supplies of ginger in Canada are currently even.

CDS Foods Inc. in Montreal, Que. carries ginger from two countries of origin—China and Peru.

“China is by far the biggest exporter of ginger and there are no supply issues with ginger from China,” says John Della Santina. He adds that both supply and demand for Chinese ginger is similar to last year at this time.

As for Peruvian ginger, Della Santina notes that supplies are shorter because the country is near the end of its season. “When it comes to Peruvian ginger, we’ve seen a significant increase in sales over last season,” he adds, also noting that the demand for Peruvian ginger has caused a significant hike in prices.

While China still holds the title as the world’s largest exporter of ginger, Della Santina notes that Peru is increasing its supplies annually. “And it’s known for quality ginger which is becoming the first choice for many people,” he says. “There are other countries of origin in the market, but these two are the most common and preferred origins of Canadian consumers.”

Even demand for ginger
Meanwhile demand is also stable in Canada right now for ginger. “We don’t see significant movement ahead unless there’s a change in the market such as supply, transportation or production issues or lockdowns that are not foreseeable,” says Della Santina.

Pricing on ginger is also unchanging. “Chinese ginger prices are similar to last year at this time while Peruvian ginger prices are higher because demand is far higher than the available supply,” adds Della Santina.

Della Santina anticipates pricing on Chinese ginger to continue to stay even for the coming months while Peru will likely stay with higher pricing. He also adds that soon ginger will be available by air from Peru and prices will go up even further.
