US federal regulators have recalled more than 940,000 bottles of Costco’s Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG after multiple reports of bottles shattering or spontaneously breaking, warning consumers of a significant “laceration hazard.”

The Prosecco bottles can break or shatter, posing a laceration hazard.”

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall on Thursday and warned consumers to avoid opening the bottles and to dispose of them safely.

The recall follows at least 10 reported incidents of bottles breaking, including one laceration injury, according to the manufacturer, F&F Fine Wines International Inc., which trades as Ethica Wines. Announcing the action, the CPSC stated: “The Prosecco bottles can break or shatter, posing a laceration hazard.”

The affected items carry the Universal Product Code 196633883742 and Costco Item Number 1879870.

Costco sold the prosecco for $8 at stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin from April to August 2025. The CPSC urge consumers not to open the bottles under any circumstances. Instead, the CPSC advises placing them in paper towels or a plastic bag before discarding.

This federal recall follows a similar notice issued directly by Costco in September for the same product. At the time, the retailer warned: “There is a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use.” Both recalls involve the same item codes and product batches.

Consumers who suspect they bought affected bottles should check the product codes, follow all disposal instructions and contact Ethica Wines for advice on securing a full refund from Costco. Ethica Wines can be reached at customercare@ethicawines.com or 786-810-7132.
