The death toll from a pet food contamination incident has risen to 70 dogs, prompting the manufacturer to expand its recall.

Dry pet food from Midwestern Pet Foods, based in Evansville, Ind., was contaminated with aflatoxin, a poison resulting from mold. At least 70 dogs have died and more than 80 others have become ill from the food, sold under the Sportmix brand.

Midwestern Pet Foods initially issued a voluntary recall in December. It has now expanded that recall to all products produced in its plant in Oklahoma containing corn with an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022.

The company issued a statement noting that it had never had a recall before in nearly 100 years of business. “We continue a thorough review of our facilities and practices in full cooperation with FDA in an effort to better serve our customers and pet parents who put their trust in us,” the statement says.
