New Zealand-based BBC Technologies is reportedly planning to build a new NZD14m ($9.2m) research and development centre in Waikato.

Established in 1980, BBC Technologies is engaged in the production of sorting and packing machines for fruits such as blueberries and cherries. It was acquired by Tomra Food in 2018.

BBC Technologies chief executive Geoff Furniss was quoted by stuff.co.nz as saying: “It is still going to take another year to get the R&D centre built, and more time to get up to speed with recruitment and so hopefully when that’s done, the world will be a better place.

“We continue to evolve our technology to provide our customers with innovative solutions that are customer-focused. This includes artificial intelligence, which has been very successful for us.

“Tomra Food’s investment tells me that they are committed to the Waikato and recognises our world-class talent right here in our region.”

The new R&D facility is expected to support the company’s growth in the global market.

The new facility will feature a 2,500m² research and development facility and a 3,000m² manufacturing centre.
