Ruiz Foods Products has issued a recall of approximately 246,514lb of frozen, not-ready-to-eat (NRTE) breakfast wrap products containing bacon over possible contamination with extraneous materials, specifically small rocks.

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the frozen egg, potato, bacon and cheese wrap items were produced on 17 and 18 January.

The products that are subject to the recall include eight-pack family size film packages containing ‘EL Monterey Egg, Potato, Bacon and Cheese Sauce Breakfast Wraps’ and bear the establishment number EST 17523A.

The NRTE breakfast wraps are said to have been shipped to retail locations across the US market.

Ruiz Foods notified FSIS on 14 June after it received three consumer complaints regarding foreign material in the wrap products. The company said that it is investigating the source of the foreign material.

The company has received one report of a potential injury associated with the consumption of this product.

FSIS has not received any additional reports of injury or illness from consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers have been urged not to consume the products and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

The recall has been categorised as Class I, which indicates that use of the product could cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

In March, US-based meat producer Tyson Foods issued a recall for 69,093lb of its frozen, ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken strip products over possible contamination with extraneous materials, including pieces of metal.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the chicken strip items were produced on 30 November 2018.
