Advantage Health Matters is recalling pumpkin seeds in Canada because of contamination with Salmonella.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported that the recall is in relation to a recall in another country, but did not say what country is involved.
The Organic Traditions brand jumbo pumpkin seeds were distributed nationwide in Canada. No illnesses have been confirmed in relation to the product.
The CFIA is concerned that consumers may have the recalled pumpkin seeds in their homes because of their long shelf life. Consumers can identify the recalled product by looking for the following information on the labels.
For the 227-gram packages consumers should look for the UCP of 6 27733 00175 5 and one of the codes L250212160 or L250319170.
For the 454-gram packages consumers should look for the UPC of 6 27733 00180 9 and the code L250319171.
Anyone who has the recalled products should throw them away and not consume them.
about Salmonella infections
Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually look, smell, or taste spoiled. Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection. Infants, children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are fragile.
Anyone who has eaten any of the recalled pumpkin seeds and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Otherwise, healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days. In some cases, however, diarrhea may be so severe that patients require hospitalization.
Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop a severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.
Some people get infected without getting sick or showing any symptoms. However, they may still spread the infections to others.
