Smith Packing, LLC, of Utica, NY, is recalling 18,792 pounds of various ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry products because of sodium nitrite levels exceeding the regulatory limit, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The issue was discovered after Smith Packing notified FSIS of consumer complaints reporting off-taste and off-color products. The affected ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry items were produced on various dates between Feb. 19, 2025, and April 24, 2025.

These items were shipped to institutional and retail locations in New York. FSIS is concerned that some products may remain in consumers’ or institutions’ refrigerators or freezers.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to institutional and retail locations in New York.
