Finnish food company Fazer Group has announced that it will end the production of its Dumle Lollipop next month.

The company said that it decided to close the production of the lollipop as the technical lifespan of the current production line has reached its final stage and become difficult to maintain and repair equipment.

The first flat lollipop was produced in 1945 and has its roots in Sweden.

Mazetti produced a flat lollipop called Dumle in 1960.

In 1975, the Fazer Group acquired Mazetti and Dumle has since been part of Fazer’s brand portfolio.

In the 1980s, the lollipop brand became significant with the introduction of twisted Dumle Toffee Caramel, which was produced at the Fazer facility in Finland.

Fazer Finland Confectionery marketing director Anne Repo said: “For us at Fazer, quality is central. We have tried to find a solution to continue the production in an efficient and sustainable way but unfortunately, that is no longer possible.

“We have reached the conclusion that no viable alternative to the proposed production line has been identified.

“The craftsmanship, as well as the recipe, is as unique as the lollipop itself and therefore hard to replac with today’s modern technology.”

The Finnish company said that it is planning to produce a newer version of Dumle Lollipop in the future.

Dumle is currently sold in more than 30 markets worldwide.

Repo added: “We know the lollipop is a beloved product by many consumers and we work hard with our selection of Dumle products. We will continue our efforts to develop and find a way to produce a lollipop again in the future.”

In January 2020, Fazer Group unveiled its plans to shut its oat manufacturing facility in Kaarina and move its operations to Koria, Finland.

With this move, the company intends to enhance the production efficiency of its Fazer Yosa oat products and support its growth plans.

Fazer Yosa products are part of the Fazer Lifestyle Foods business area.
