The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR) is now available in Chinese and Portuguese, after previously only being available in Spanish and English.

The Produce Safety rule established science-based minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption. The congressionally mandated rule is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to implement the Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA) FSMA. The final rule went into effect Jan. 26, 2016.

Adding Chinese and Portuguese translations of the PSR helps to ensure that this important produce safety regulation is accessible to a broad audience, according to FDA officials. The translations of the PSR can be found on the FSMA webpage.

Additional materials
In conjunction, the Produce Safety Alliance, an FDA-funded produce safety training partner, is publishing a grower curriculum for farmers in Chinese and will soon finalize the curricula in Portuguese.

The Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) is a collaboration between Cornell University, FDA and USDA to prepare fresh produce growers to meet the regulatory requirements included in the Produce Safety Rule.

The alliance recognizes the diversity of fruit and vegetable growers across the country, including the wide range of commodities grown, farm sizes, regional climates, and market venues, according to a recent announcement. The PSA curriculum has been designed as a standardized course and is intended to provide a consistent foundation of produce safety and FSMA Produce Safety Rule information.
