Dietary /edible fiber is the edible parts of plants or analogous carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion and absorption in the human small intestine with complete or partial fermentation in the large intestine. Dietary fiber includes polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, lignin, and associated plant substances. Dietary fibers promote beneficial physiological effects including laxation, and/or blood cholesterol attenuation, and/or blood glucose attenuation.
Potato/tuber pulp, as the byproduct of the potato/tuber(potato, cassava, sweet potato etc.) starch processing, has plenty of edible fiber becoming one kind of safe and cheap resource of edible. The pulp of tuber starch factory can be directly processed into the edible fiber through the following technology for the continued economic competitiveness of the tuber starch industry.
Process description for edible fiber production
The pulp from the extraction sieves will be diluted and pumped continuously into an agitated buffer tank. From there it will be pumped into the agitated reactor for a batchwise reaction. Chemicals are added and the reaction takes place under continuous agitating. After a certain reaction time, the slurry will be neutralized and pumped into a membrane type filter press for de- watering. The cake falls onto a conveyor belt which feeds the mixing hopper of the dryer feed. The dryer is a flash dryer type (hot air) with back- mixing. The product is separated in cyclones and fed to a pin mill to break it down as required. After sifting the product is packed in 25 kg bags.
