Spirulina, also called blue-green algae, belongs to cyanophyta, Cyanophyceae. Due to the primitive simple cell structure, it is the earliest photosynthetic creature existing for more than 3.5 billion years. As a low-grade creature, they are kind of uni-cellular or multi-cellular protonema, known for its state of being spiral model under the microscope. With no colloid sheath on the surface, it cannot be easily attached by the microorganisms. With bubbles in the cell, it has good floating feature. There is no taper roof for the cell or filament, and the cross wall is not obvious. The top cell is round without incrassation on the shelltfacesltell, along with the possibility of mass propagation, thus forming water bloom.
Spirulina is also a kind of photosynthetic autotrophs creature, of which its cell contains photosynthetic synusia (thylakoid), vitamin, crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate and carotene, etc. Spirulina contains rich protein of about 60-70%, with reasonable amino acid, especially rich carotenoid, vitamin B12, iron and linoleic acid.
Edibleness of spirulina:
With rich protein of 60%-70%, spirulina has rich nutrition. 1g of spirulina equals 1kg of vegetables and fruits, and also it contains eight essential amino acid. Due to its structure, creatures can have the absorption rate of over 75%.
Research shows that adults having 8 g spirulina can have all the essential amino acid and vitamin. Generally, to keep healthy, people can at least have 3-5 g of spirulina, especially before breakfast. To be healthier, you can have more, and patient undergoing chemotherapy can have 10-15 g, three times a day.
Application of spirulina in aquaculture
At present, spirulina industry has gained fast development. Through constant technology upgrading, the cost has decreased, which can benefit the development and application of both aquaculture and feed.
Spirulina can be widely applied in aquaculture, mainly because:
1.Small particle diameter with the width of 5-10 um and length of 200-500um. During the application, the number will usually exceed 120, and the powder cannot be easily submerge and affect the water quality.
2.Besides the rich nutrition, spirilina also has reasonable constituting elements. Many unsaturated fattyacids, such as γ-linolenic acid can promote the animal breeding and growth, and thereby improving the survival rate and transformation rate of larval. Especially for the high carotenoid content, which mainly containsβ- beta carotene and leaf yellow acid, which can be transformed into astaxanthin and spot chela xanthine through metabolism. Meanwhile, carotenoid is the precursor of vitamin A, which can transform into vitamin A at any time, thus enhancing the cell tenacity and activity of free radical, thus enhancing the resistance to bacteria and other mould fungi diseases.
