Parisian Ag-tech innovator Ÿnsect has become the world’s first company to secure market approval for an insect-based fertiliser.

Parisian Ag-tech innovator Ÿnsect has become the world’s first company to secure market approval for an insect-based fertiliser.

ŸnFrass is derived from the insect waste – or frass – of the mealworm Tenebrio Molitor which feeds on cereal by-products at Ÿnsect’s factory in Dole, France.

The product is the fruit of four years of research and development between Ÿnsect and several leading institutions and it can now be used in organic farming.

ŸnFrass’s first customers include Compo Group, the European leader in plant nutrition for amateur gardeners and Torres, one of the most admired European wine brands.

“This certification and market approval is the result of the most stringent evaluation procedures for this type of products and is a guarantee of the highest quality, giving us the ability to export globally,” said CEO Antoine Hubert.

Ÿnsect has devoted four years of research, in partnership with renowned research institutes, to develop its natural fertiliser ŸnFrass and to study its impact on crops and soils.

The results in the fields and greenhouse tests carried out in cooperation with the project partners, are very encouraging, the company said.

Tests show a significant increase in biomass and yield on all of the crops tested compared to the use of a 100% chemical fertiliser.
