Michael Foods, a business unit of consumer packaged goods (CPG) firm Post Holdings, has unveiled plans to construct a new $85m egg processing plant in Norwalk, Iowa.

The 150,000ft2 site for the new plant will also double up as a distribution facility for the company and is expected to create 100-150 jobs.

Construction of the new egg processing plant is slated to begin in summer and is targeted to be completed in 2019.

Post Holdings said that the new Norwalk facility will process eggs and pre-cooked egg products.

Post integrated supply chain senior vice president Steve Schonhoff said: “We looked at numerous locations in the Midwest, and Norwalk had many advantages. We look forward to Michael Foods becoming a preferred employer in the area and being part of the community.”

based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, Michael Foods also manufactures and processes cheese, pasta and potato-based products in addition to processing eggs.

Some of the foodservice brands of Michael Foods include Simply Potatoes and Papetti’s. The company was acquired by Post for $2.45bn in June 2014.

Post president and CEO Rob Vitale said: “We are delighted that the internal growth at Michael Foods supports this expansion.

“We believe it will further enhance our position as the nation’s leader in valued added egg products.”

Last month, Post disclosed its plans to look out for strategic alternatives for its private brands businesses, which manufacture nut butter, dried fruit and nut, granola and pasta products. The company is exploring multiple options like going in for an initial public offering, a sale of the businesses, a private equity placement or even a strategic combination.

In January, the company also completed its $1.5bn acquisition of Ohio-based sausage maker Bob Evans Farms. The acquisition was made by Post with an intention to consolidate its place in refrigerated retail and food-service channels.
