The Age of Durian Freedom is Coming! Why is durian fresh and cheap this year?
Publish time:2026-07-29
The special cold chain train of the China-Laos railway enables durian to reach Kunming in 26 hours and cover the whole country in 48 hours after loading from Laos orchards. The accurate temperature control of the whole journey ± 0.5°C reduces the cargo damage rate from 20% to less than 5%, and the logistics cost is reduced by about 15%. As of the end of June 2026, the total capacity of cold storage in the country reached 0.27 billion cubic meters, and the number of refrigerated vehicles was 604000, an increase of 12.8 percent over the same period last year.

This year, the durian market has witnessed a rare phenomenon of a steep decline in prices coupled with an overall improvement in quality. The wholesale price at Beijing's Xinfadi Market has dropped to as low as 15-16 yuan per jin, and the retail price has repeatedly fallen into the "1" range. This is attributed to the combined benefits of abundant production in Southeast Asian countries, diversified import channels, the cold chain revolution brought by the China-Laos Railway, and the accelerated layout of domestically produced durian.

1. Concentrated burst of supply from the production area

The main producing areas in Southeast Asia have ushered in a historic year of bumper harvests. Durians in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, and other countries have entered their peak fruit-bearing period. Vietnam's durian planting area has surged nearly fivefold in 10 years, Thailand's production has increased by 30-40% year-on-year, and the import volume in the first quarter has nearly tripled compared to the same period in previous years. The import sources have shifted from Thailand being the sole dominant player in the past to multiple countries competing on the same stage, breaking the single supply pattern that lasted for 20 years.

II. Logistics revolution achieves "fast and cost-effective"

The China-Laos Railway cold chain special train has become a key turning point. After being loaded from the orchards in Laos, durians can reach Kunming within 26 hours, and cover the entire country within 48 hours. The customs clearance time has been compressed from the original 3-5 days to a maximum of 20 hours. The whole-journey ±0.5°C precision temperature-controlled refrigerated containers have reduced the damage rate of goods from 20% to below 5%, logistics costs have been reduced by about 15%, and transportation time has been shortened by 1.5-2 days.

III. Comprehensive upgrading of cold chain infrastructure

The total capacity of cold storage nationwide has reached 270 million cubic meters, marking a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. 105 national key cold chain logistics bases cover the eastern, central, and western regions. The number of new energy refrigerated vehicles has increased by 12.8% year-on-year, with an operating cost per kilometer that is more than 1 yuan lower than that of fuel vehicles, effectively reducing the cost of terminal distribution. Imported fruits have achieved seamless cold chain transportation throughout the entire process, directly reaching consumers from the port.

IV. Dual release of market expansion and policy dividends

After the RCEP agreement came into effect, the import tariff on durian was reduced to zero, and customs opened a green channel, reducing the customs clearance time from 4 hours to 15 minutes. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, and other countries have been successively approved to export fresh durian to China, leading to intensified price competition - the price of Vietnamese golden pillows is 1-2 yuan lower per jin than similar products from Thailand. The pricing model has shifted from "relying on the market" to advance contracting and price locking, with e-commerce platforms and live streaming rooms using it as a traffic-generating tool rather than a profit center.

V. Domestic durian moves from "bonsai" to industry

The cultivation area of durians in Hainan has exceeded 50,000 mu, with an expected fruit-bearing area of over 10,000 mu in 2026, yielding approximately 5,000 tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 100%. Yunnan and other regions are also accelerating their layouts. Although domestically produced durians are currently mainly supplied to the high-end market, their presence is like a "sword hanging over the head", forcing importers not to raise prices arbitrarily.

VI. Market Feedback: Quality Improvement and Consumer Rationality

Consumers generally reflect that this year's durian pulp is golden, soft, and sticky, with good sweetness and fragrance. Many netizens can open five rooms of pulp with just 64 yuan. The daily sales volume in wholesale markets reaches more than 15 tons, and supermarket sales have increased by 30%. At the same time, some consumers point out that there are differences in fruit shape and maturity, and suggest paying attention to factors such as round fruit shape, elastic thorns, sweet smell, and avoiding alcohol taste when purchasing. In terms of health tips, durian is a high-sugar and high-calorie fruit, so it should be consumed in moderation.

Overall, the "fresh and affordable" durian this year is attributed to the combined effects of bountiful harvests in production areas, accelerated transportation, improved cold chain, market competition, and the promotion of domestic production. As new planting areas in various countries continue to enter their fruit-bearing period, durian prices are expected to decline in the coming years, and consumers are poised to enjoy the long-term benefits of "durian freedom".
