Tetra Pak has introduced sunflower protein, a plant-based ingredient designed to help food and beverage producers expand into plant-based and functional product categories while maximizing existing production infrastructure.

etra Pak has introduced sunflower protein, a plant-based ingredient designed to help food and beverage producers expand into plant-based and functional product categories while maximizing existing production infrastructure. The ingredient contains up to 50% protein along with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, with a neutral, slightly nutty flavor profile and off-white coloring.

The plant-based F&B market is forecast to triple in size to US$35.9 billion by 2033, according to data cited by Tetra Pak.

The ingredient can be used across multiple applications, including plant-based iced coffee, yogurt, and ready-to-drink protein beverages. With a dosing range of 2% to 7%, sunflower protein offers formulation flexibility and can be adjusted to boost protein content, enhance texture, or deliver balanced nutrition. The company says the ingredient can be integrated into current production processes with minimal adjustments and investment.

“Sunflower protein is a renewable and flexible ingredient that opens the door to new product opportunities without requiring major changes to existing lines and product formulations,” says Sasha Ilyukhin, senior vice president of global processing services and services solutions at Tetra Pak.

“With its adaptable flavor and nutritional benefits, it’s a great way for producers to expand product portfolios using current infrastructure, attract health-conscious consumers, and stay ahead of market trends.”

The launch expands Tetra Pak’s ingredient portfolio and supports the company’s positioning in the food supplement and nutrition category. Through its product development centers, Tetra Pak helps F&B producers accelerate time-to-market and optimize product creation for health-conscious consumers. The company notes that 74% of consumers actively seek products with health claims.

The company notes that the global protein market is forecast to surpass US$27.48 billion, while Europe’s meal replacement segment alone is set to grow from US$2.04 billion in 2024 to US$3.91 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate of 7.53%.

Sunflower protein demonstrates high digestibility, indicating an amino acid profile suitable for plant-based formulations.
